Grade 4

Welcome to the fourth grade! Referred to as "Looking Forward," the classroom is named after a poem written by Robert Louis Stevenson, which describes a child’s growth into a young adult. The fourth grade class spends the year preparing for young adulthood, and they are "looking forward" to their future in the fifth grade and, subsequently, our Middle Grade Level.

Always busy, the fourth graders explore and discover the multitudes of treasures of California state history. Language arts and reading skills are developed as they read rich novels, such as Island of the Blue Dolphins and By the Great Horn Spoon. Whether they are making a personal connection with a story from an anthology, writingin their reading response journal for literature discussion, or researching about ecology on the iPads for science, students are engaged and eager to learn. In math, students become more proficient in their abilities to problem solve by looking at the “why” before the “how.”

In addition to taking weekly art, music, dance, physical education classes, and Spanish, the fourth grade continues with their study of Mandarin Chinese.
