Domenic Bove and Kate Hedbabny Place 2nd in Stevenson Trophy Regatta

Posted: November 16, 2010

On Saturday, October 30, seventeen boats representing 11 schools competed for the Stevenson Trophy, emblematic of sailing supremacy on Monterey Bay for the fall season. Senior co-captain Domenic Bove, with sophomore Kate Hedbabny in the crew position, took second place to Pacific Collegiate's Patrick Tara and Griffin Lay.

Also competing for Stevenson were ten other sailors: seniors Alec Aivazis (co-captain), Greg Guggenheim and Evans Attwell; junior Trevor Foss; sophomores Tilly Namkai, Nuri Park, Remy Margerum and Hunt Ma; and freshmen Riku Ito and Julianne Garber.

Fresh breezes out of the south, with rain showers threatening, made the sailing occasionally wet. There were at least ten capsizes over the course of seven races, including one for Bove and Hedbabny. Although they had four victories going into the last race, Bove and Hedbabny were just one point ahead of the Pacific Collegiate boat. An aggressive starting strategy penalized the Stevenson pair for a premature start, and the lead slipped away.

Both Bove and Tara are previous winners of the Stevenson Trophy. Bove won with Hanna Sanford '10 in the spring of this year, while Tara won a year ago.

The final regatta for fall season is the Ben Watson Race, an intrasquad contest in memory of Watson '03, former team captain.
