Cleve Thayer has been coaching all levels of cross country, boys and girls, at Stevenson School since 1984. During this time period, he has also taught in the Mathematics, History, and World Languages Departments. In addition to his cross country coaching duties, Cleve has coached boys and girls track as an assistant in charge of distance runners for nearly the same length of time as his cross country tenure. His extensive coaching resume also includes two years assisting with boys swimming at Stevenson as well as three years as an assistant swimming coach at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut. Under Cleve’s tutelage, numerous Stevenson harriers have competed in the California State Championships either as individuals or as part of teams. The best Stevenson team performances at the California State Championships were 2nd place for boys in division III in 1987, 3rd place for boys in division III in 1988, and 3rd place for boys in division IV in 2010. Cleve is the director of the long-running (now over 50 years) Stevenson Cross Country Invitational Meet for boys and girls, which is held in the early fall on the Stevenson campus. Cleve’s honors include the Don L. Dormer Coach’s Award and the Central Coast Section Honor Coach Award for Cross Country.
