STEM

Through the interactive studies of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, students explore earth and life sciences, progressively deepening their examinations of the underlying principles of biology, marine biology, chemistry, and physics, and their connections across the domains of science. The scientific method teaches students to observe patterns or explain a phenomenon; technology provides them with the tools to investigate, analyze, and communicate their ideas; engineering principles let them practice design for solutions; and math is the computational language that supports an engaged, evidence based discussion.

Communication and collaboration are essential to teaching and learning in science and technology. Through scientific inquiry and hands-on-learning, students mirror professional scientists’ practices of investigation and construction of models and theories about the natural world. Access to the expertise of others is modeled as teachers implement a cross-domain and interdisciplinary approach. Lab work builds upon students’ prior experience with investigation and problem-solving through the understanding and implementation of the scientific method.
