Sports Report for the Week of March 5

Pirate Pair Wins Coastal Cup Regatta Continuing Their Winning Ways
Two of Stevenson's top sailors took their FJ sloop to six straight wins to capture the Youth Coastal Cup on Saturday, March 7. Gage Bradford '20 and Ryan Marquess '22 alternated at the helm to best nine other pairs. A non-league event, the regatta was hosted by the Santa Cruz Yacht Club. In addition to Bradford, Marquess and Santa Cruz sailors, four sailors from the Stockton Sailing Club competed. Conditions were challenging, with shifty winds, moderate swells and rain.
Bradford and Marquess have led the Pirates to a remarkable record this year, including victories in NorCal events in Richmond and Alameda.
Pirate Sailors in Top Half at Treasure Island
Six Stevenson sailors started their Spring Break competing in the Golden Bear Regatta, hosted by the UC Berkeley Sailing Team at the Treasure Island Sailing Center. Fifty-seven high school teams from around the state competed on February 22-23; the Pirate team finished the weekend in 25th place.
Gage Bradford ’20, Ryan Marquess ’22 and Ryder Weston ’23 sailed their two-person FJ sloop in A Division; they finished 9th in their best race. Tony Chen ’21, Carmen Berg ’22 and Luc DuPreez ’23 took over for the B Division races, earning a 12th place for their top finish. Each team’s final score combined the tallies from the two divisions.

Coach Bradley Schoch’s team is currently ranked 19th in the state, on track to qualify for the Gold Pacific Coast Championship, to be held at Long Beach in April. The top five finishers in that event will go on to the national championship, scheduled for May on Lake Erie.
Varsity Girls Softball Team Opens Season with big Shutout over Gonzales
Freshman Abby Yamashita threw a no-hitter in her first high school start. She also collected 2 hits. Rhea Cosand ’22 went 3-4 and Gaby Perez ’22 went 2-3 to aide in the win.

Down big early, Varsity Softball Storms Back to Post the Win
Going into the 6th inning the Pirates only had 4 hits and were looking at a 9-0 deficit. By the end of the 6th inning they had a 10-9 lead. The 9 hits and 10 runs in the bottom of the 6th was just enough to secure a victory for the home team. Rhea Cosand went 3x4 with a double and a game-tying homer, Nisha Singh ’20 was 2x4, Abby Yamashita ’23 went 3x4, and Alex Dalhamer ’23 was 2x3. Baylee Zorn ’22 and Courtney Bishop ’20 both had huge doubles in the 6th. Yamashita pitched the first 5 innings and Bishop came in and pitched the 6th and 7th to capture her first win of the season.

Boys Golf Team Opens Season with a Strong Showing at De La Salle Invitational 
Stevenson took 2nd place at the 35th De La Salle Invitational at Ruby Hills Golf Club in Pleasanton in a field of 24 teams. Freshman Curtis Da Silva, playing in his first-ever high school competition, was the overall individual winner of the tournament, shooting a 2 under 70. Other notables for the Pirates were Alex Iniakov ’20, who came in with a 78, Kyle McTamaney ’22, who shot a 79, and Robert You ’20, who had a hole-in-one.

Boys Golf Team Takes First Gabilan Tournament Competition
The Stevenson boys golf team won Wednesday’s Gabilan tournament, the first league competition of the 2020 season. The Pirates shot a team score of 190. Second place went to Carmel (212) and third place was Palma (223). Stevenson was led by it's two returning players from last year’s CCS championship team, Alex Iniakov and Robert You, who shared medalist honors with a pair of 36s. Freshmen Patricio Esquer and Curtis DaSilva both shot 38, and Kyle McTamaney shot 42. 

JV Boys Golf Team Opens Season with a pair of Victories
JV golf teed up their new season with two wins over Palma and Aptos. In the season opener against the Chieftains, the Pirates won 254-278 with Taichairo Watanabe ’21 the medalist with a 45 score. Against the Mariners the Pirates prevailed 243-260 with Jonathan Sze ’22 the medalist with a 45.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse Opens Season with Trip to Utah
Venturing out of state to open the season, the Pirate boys varsity lacrosse team gained valuable experience winning the first of their three contests against very strong competition. The three game results were:
Won 8-4 vs Copper Hills HS
Lost 15-3 vs Brighton HS
Lost 16-2 vs Corner Canyon HS
Darnell Adler ’22 recorded double-digit saves in each game. Connor Cosand ’21, Tyler Olson ’21, Devang Patel ’21, Hayden Roth ’20, and Tristan Evans ’23 all scored goals for the Pirates. Michael Barbera's ’20 defensive effort and ground ball play stood out in all three matches. 
Boys Tennis Opens Season With Rain-Shortened Win over Monterey 4-0
Adam Hidas ’20, Peter Akcan ’22, and Jack Page ’23 earned straight-set victories in singles for the Pirates, while Spencer Hidas ’23 and Vikram Puar ’23 sealed the win at #1 doubles against Monterey High. Unfortunately, rain came in the early evening to the Monterey Tennis Center, and the remaining three matches could not be finished.  
Boys Tennis Serves Past Alisal 7-0
On a windy day in Salinas, singles players Adam Hidas, Peter Akcan, Jack Page and Logan Eckert ’20 all earned straight-set wins for the Pirates in singles, while Thang Tran ’20 and Will McMillan ’22, Spencer Hidas and Vikram Puar, and Will Applegate ’22 and Aden Yung ’23 completed the sweep in doubles.
