Girls Varsity Basketball Picks Up Two Wins to Remain in First Place
The girls' varsity basketball team continued their winning ways with two league wins last week. The Pirates beat King City team 55-39 on the road. Nisha Singh ’20  and Rhea Cosand ’22 led the well-balanced attack with 13 points apiece with Kailey Clymo ’21 right behind with 12 points. 

Coach Lucy Stockdale offered the following:
“At the end of the game, one of the referees approached and commended on the integrity, sportsmanship, and respect each of our girls demonstrated in the game and praised the enthusiasm we had on the bench. He especially recognized Kailey and Rhea for their extraordinary leadership on the court. It was a moment making me extremely proud to coach this team.”

In the 43-36 win over St. Francis of Watsonville, Kailey Clymo came close to breaking the 20 point barrier with 19 followed by Gaby Perez ’22 with 13 and Rhea Cosand with 7.

Both wins keep the Pirates firmly in first place mid-way through the second half of league play.

Girls Varsity Basketball Drops Non-Conference Affair to Priory 62-35
Taking a break from Cypress Division play, the Pirate varsity girls took on a strong Priory team and fell short 62-35. The scoring was led by Rhea Cosand topped the attack with 12 points and was aided by Gaby Perez with 8 and Kailey Clymo with 7.

Pirate Varsity Boys Basketball Picks Up Two Mission Division Wins
Traveling to Seaside last Friday Luke Driscoll ’20 tossed in 30 points to lead the Stevenson attack. Showing a balanced attack after Driscoll, the Pirates got 12 points from Evan Johnson ’22, 9 from Dylan Santos ’20, 8 from Sam Fontaine ’20, and 7 from Benjamin Soria ’20.

In a key Mission match up Wednesday night in front of a raucous crowd at home, the Pirates solidified their hold on first place with a 64-39 win over Christopher High School from Gilroy.

Luke Driscoll again provided the offensive firepower with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Evan Johnson contributed 16 to the cause and Benjamin Soria hauled down 17 rebounds to go along with 7 points. 

JV Boys Basketball Drops a Pair of Three-Point Games and Beats Seaside on the Road
Kyle McTamaney ’22 and Audon Forgus ’23 led the scoring in the 49-41 win over Seaside with 14 and 10 points respectively. Against Alvarez last Monday, the Pirates dropped a thrilling 60-57 match up to the Eagles on the home court. Audon Forgus dropped in 24 points and Weile Zheng ’22 added 10. Wednesday evening at home before an enthusiastic crowd the Pirates came close to pulling off the upset of the Christopher JVs 57-54. Audon Forgus scored 29 points and Weile Zheng contributed 10 points.

Pirate Boys Varsity Soccer Beats Pacific Grove and Draws At Marina
In the 3-1 win over the Breakers Ardan Dorrian ’22 was the defensive stalwart with 11 saves.

Rolando Ortiz ’20 scored all three goals. The first was assisted by Quan Bui ’22. The second goal was by Nathaniel Hahn ’22, and the third was unassisted (on a penalty kick he earned and finished). In the match at Marina, a 1-1 tie, the lone goal was scored by Ben Hahn ’20 (free kick from 40 yards out) and Ardan Dorrian contributed 7 saves in the goal.

The Girls JV Soccer Team Continues to Improve with Wins Over Pajaro Valley and Rival Carmel
JV girls soccer continued their win streak with a 3-1 win over Pajaro Valley. Amber Voluntad ’23 led the way scoring twice, one on a penalty shot she stuck in front of hundreds of fans watching from the varsity game above. After losing to Carmel 10-0 to start the season the JV girls gained revenge turning the tables on the Padres with a 3-1 victory.

“A slow start saw us concede an early goal only to score 3 unanswered. Amber Voluntad leveled it at 1-1 and Harmony Jones finished it off with a brace to secure a 3-1 win over our crosstown rival. It was a win that portrays our season of growth as athletic soccer players and competitors after losing to Carmel to start the season.“

Helen Yang ’20 had the goal for the Pirates. 

Pirate Pair Finish Fifth in NorCal Regatta
Ryan Marquess '22 and Lilah Parker '22 finished a four-race series in 5th place at the Norcal 5 Regatta, held at Redwood City on February 1. Fifteen two-person teams sailed in the Gold Division for experienced sailors.

The Pirate duo were 3rd in their best race. The winds were light to moderate; current and fog on the racecourse made for tricky conditions.
